Joshua T. Atkinson recognizes that Freeport is at a crossroads. Our city’s history is marked by both triumphs and challenges, and while we are proud of our heritage, we must also confront the inequities that have existed for far too long. For generations, our Black, Hispanic, and other minority communities have faced systemic discrimination and exclusion, often being recognized only when it was politically convenient. Joshua knows this is unacceptable, and as mayor, he is committed to ensuring that no community member is treated as a political pawn.

Under Joshua’s leadership, this cycle of exclusion and marginalization will end. These communities are not only essential to Freeport’s past but also its future, and they deserve to be treated with the respect and dignity that has too often been denied them. Joshua believes that every resident of Freeport, regardless of race, background, or economic status, should have an equal voice in shaping our city. He is dedicated to building a Freeport where everyone, not just the well-connected or the wealthy, is given a seat at the table.

One of the core differences between Joshua and his predecessors is his commitment to being present, accessible, and engaged with all corners of Freeport. He will not limit himself to City Hall or high-profile events. Instead, he will actively be in the community—both on the East and West sides—meeting residents where they are, whether in the full light of day or the quiet of night. He believes that true leadership means walking the streets of every neighborhood, being available to listen and act upon the concerns of every resident. Joshua’s leadership will not be confined to the well-attended events or to those with political influence. He will engage with everyone—working families, struggling small business owners, and those who may feel left out of the system.

Joshua firmly believes that Freeport’s success lies in its ability to unite all its people. We must break down the barriers that have divided us and work together for the common good. His vision is one where the city’s leadership reflects the diversity of its residents and where every individual has an opportunity to be heard, to contribute, and to thrive. This means creating real opportunities for dialogue, not just among those in power, but among residents from every background, every neighborhood, and every walk of life. Joshua will ensure that Freeport's future is shaped by the input of its entire community, not just a select few.

To achieve this, Joshua plans to work in close partnership with our police department, community leaders, local organizations, and religious leaders. Together, they will create a community-driven approach that ensures fairness, equal protection under the law, and real justice for all. But more than just policy, Joshua understands that rebuilding trust and fostering unity requires meaningful engagement. He will lead with an open-door policy, actively seeking the input of those who have been historically marginalized and ensuring they are part of every decision that affects their lives.

While Freeport has faced its share of challenges, Joshua believes this is a time of great opportunity—a moment for the city to come together and move forward stronger and more united than ever before. He envisions a Freeport where diversity is seen as a source of strength, where no one is left behind, and where people of all races, backgrounds, and incomes come together to build a better future.

As mayor, Joshua T. Atkinson will ensure that every resident feels valued, respected, and included in the city’s decision-making process.
